Helicobacter pylori
What is H. pylori
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that infects the lining of the stomach. It’s a major cause of stomach and duodenal ulcers and is associated with stomach cancer and MALT lymphoma. Roughly half of the global population is infected.
Symptoms of H. pylori infection
These include bad breath, dull or burning stomach pain, unplanned weight loss, bloating, nausea/vomiting, indigestion, frequent burping, loss of appetite, and dark stools.

Health risks and related conditions
Infection with H. pylori increases risk of peptic ulcer disease, especially in combination with NSAIDs and aspirin. Long-term infection is also linked to gastric cancer and MALT lymphoma. Treating (eradicating) H. pylori helps reduce these risks.
Diagnostic guidelines
The Urea Breath Test (UBT) is considered the most investigated and preferred non-invasive test for H. pylori, particularly in test-and-treat strategies. Stool antigen tests (monoclonal) are also acceptable; serological tests are less preferred unless thoroughly validated.
